Don flees from conservative Texas to the liberal city of Portland, Oregon after he finds out that his mother is in a relationship with his youth pastor. He faces various challenges such as romantic disappointment, civil disobedience, a lesbian friend, and excessive drinking while at Reed College. Despite trying to conceal his Christian background and suppressing his religious desires, Don struggles to find balance and stability, facing confusion, frustration, and even embarrassment along the way.
