The story follows Pug Henry’s navigation through the circumstances preceding and unfolding during World War II. His posting in Europe exposes him to the emergence of Nazi Germany, the propagation of fascism, and the mounting tensions that ultimately culminate in the war’s eruption. The miniseries portrays the array of personal and professional trials confronted by Pug Henry and his spouse and their three children, all of whom become entangled in the worldwide turmoil.

Stalag 17 begins on the longest night of the year in December 1944 in a Luftwaffe prisoner-of-war camp somewhere along the Danube River. Two Americans, Manfredi and Johnson, try to escape through a tunnel, but are shot by waiting guards when they emerge outside the barbed wire fence.
