The auctioneer presents a shattered chandelier, relating it to ‘the strange affair of the Phantom of the Opera’. As it is hoisted up to the roof, the story moves back to 1870.

Amidst the backdrop of World War I, Vera Brittain, a student at Oxford University, decides to pause her academic pursuits and dedicates herself to nursing duties. Meanwhile, her brother, her suitor, and an undisclosed admirer find themselves confronted with mortality on the battlefields.

A group of chickens live on an egg farm run by the Tweedys. One day, the chickens’ leader, Ginger, observes a rooster named Rocky Rhodes crash-land in the farm and hides him from the Tweedys. Rocky saves her, giving them time to warn the others of the Tweedys’ plans and only a short time to escape.

Jeff Bauman is a well-intentioned but underachieving Boston native who works at the deli counter of a Costco and lives in a small two-bedroom apartment with his alcoholic mother Patty. After learning that Erin is running in the Boston Marathon to raise money for the hospital she works at, Jeff asks every patron in the bar to donate and then promises Erin he’ll wait at the finish line for her with a big sign.

Spider is the story of Dennis Cleg, a man who is given a room in a halfway house catering to mentally disturbed people. The son, as a grown man, seems to recreate in his memory the buildup to his father’s murder of his mother by hitting her on the head with a spade with the passive support of a prostitute he is involved with, who then moves into the house and is presented as his mother.
