Ann is a hard-working 23-year-old mother with two small daughters, an unemployed husband, a mother who sees her life as a failure, and a jailed father whom she has not seen for ten years. She decides to change her hair, record birthday messages for the girls for every year until they’re 18, and tries to set up her husband with another woman.

Set in the 1860s, the fiction moves across different locations such as London, Cuba, Cádiz and Mexico. The plot tracks the love story between Mauro Larrea and Soledad Montalvo, a refined woman belonging to a noted winemaking family from Jerez.

In 1993, Martin, a US student at the University of Oxford, wants Arthur Seldom as his thesis supervisor. He idolises Seldom and has learned all about him. He takes accommodation in Oxford at the house of Mrs. Eagleton, an old friend of Seldom. Also in the house is her daughter, Beth, who is her full-time caregiver and a musician by occupation.
