Taking place during the 1920s and 1940s, amidst the picturesque setting of Oxford, artist Charles Ryder strikes up a friendship with Sebastian Flyte, a member of a wealthy English aristocratic family. Charles becomes entwined with their family affairs and frequents their grand estate known as Brideshead Castle.

There are significant differences between this adaptation and the original novel. Whereas the action of the novel takes place in France, this screen version is set in the UK in 1952 as Britain prepares for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.
