“Every adaptation has things you have to leave behind in service of creating a cinematic idea that embodies the essential values of the book.”

There is value to both forms. It is probably a better overall experience to read the book but watching the movie has value in other ways. Btw a friend who watched the movie would like for there to be a CD with its soundtrack songs.
Richard Rossi’s performance as the con man preacher is even better because its more nuanced than Burt Lancaster in “Elmer Gantry.” See the indie film for sure, but to delve deeper into the characters and the world of Pentecostal Christianity, read the novel. It unmasks the cons of faith-based frauds, but does so artfully without naming names.
