Movie novelizations: When movies become novels

Bruce Wayne escalates his crusade against crime, teaming up with Lieutenant Jim Gordon and District Attorney Harvey Dent to eradicate the lingering criminal elements infesting the city. While their alliance initially yields promising results, they become ensnared in a maelstrom of anarchy orchestrated by a burgeoning criminal genius dubbed The Joker, instilling fear among the populace of Gotham.

Bane, a masked terrorist and former member of the League of Shadows, abducts nuclear physicist Dr. Leonid Pavel from a CIA aircraft over Uzbekistan before crashing the aircraft. Bane sets up his base in the city sewers, and prompts Wayne’s corporate rival John Daggett to buy Wayne’s fingerprints.

In 2067, crop blights and dust storms threaten humanity’s survival. Corn is the last viable crop. The crew includes scientists Dr. Amelia Brand (Professor Brand ‘s daughter), Dr. Romilly, Dr. Doyle, and robots TARS and CASE. After traversing the wormhole, Romilly studies the black hole while Cooper, Doyle, and Brand descend in a landing craft to investigate Miller’s planet, an ocean world.

Soon-to-retire detective William Somerset is partnered with short-tempered but idealistic David Mills, who has recently moved to an unnamed large city with his wife Tracy. Somerset sympathizes, having had a similar situation with his ex-girlfriend many years earlier, and advises her to tell Mills only if she plans to keep the child.

In AD 180, Hispano-Roman General Maximus Decimus Meridius intends to return to his home after he leads the Roman army to victory against the Germanic tribes near Vindobona on the Limes Germanicus. Emperor Marcus Aurelius tells Maximus that his own son, Commodus, is unfit to rule and that he wishes Maximus to succeed him, as regent, to help save Rome from corruption and restore the Roman Republic.

As a child in Gotham City, Bruce Wayne falls down a dry well and is attacked by a swarm of bats, developing a fear of bats. Outside, mugger Joe Chill murders Bruce’s parents in front of him, and the orphaned Bruce is raised by the family butler, Alfred Pennyworth. Bruce poses publicly as a shallow playboy, while setting up a base in the caves beneath Wayne Manor and taking up the vigilante identity of Batman, inspired by his childhood fear, which he has now conquered.

On the morning of June 6, 1944, American soldiers land at Omaha Beach as part of the Normandy invasion. Captain John H. Miller of the 2nd Ranger Battalion leads a breakout from the beach. Three days after D-Day, Miller receives orders to go behind enemy lines to retrieve James Francis Ryan, from the 101st Airborne Division, whose brothers have been killed in action.

The galaxy is in a period of civil war. Princess Leia, secretly one of the Rebellion ‘s leaders, has obtained its schematics, but her starship is intercepted by an Imperial Star Destroyer under the command of the ruthless Sith Lord Darth Vader, an agent to the Empire.

Three years after the destruction of the Death Star, the Rebel Alliance, led by Princess Leia, has set up a new base on the ice planet Hoth. The Imperial fleet, led by a merciless Darth Vader, hunts for the new Rebel base by dispatching probe droids across the galaxy. Before Luke succumbs to hypothermia, the Force spirit of his deceased mentor, Obi-Wan Kenobi, instructs him to go to the swamp planet Dagobah to train under Jedi Master Yoda.

In 1985, Hill Valley, California, teenager Marty McFly lives with his family: his mother Lorraine is an overweight, depressed alcoholic; his cowardly father George is bullied by his supervisor, Biff Tannen; his older siblings are professional and social failures. That night, Marty meets his eccentric scientist friend Emmett ‘Doc’ Brown in the Twin Pines mall parking lot. Doc unveils a time machine built from a modified DeLorean.

In 1988, following his mother’s death, a young Peter Quill is abducted from Earth by a group of alien thieves and smugglers called the Ravagers led by Yondu Udonta. An inmate there, Drax the Destroyer, attempts to kill Gamora due to her association with the powerful intergalactic warlord, Thanos, and Ronan, who killed his family.

In 2027, the world is in turmoil, with the United States fractured as a result of a second civil war and a pandemic of the St. Mary’s Virus ravaging Europe. On November 4, a vigilante in a Guy Fawkes mask, V, rescues Evey Hammond, an employee of state-run British Television Network, from members of the Fingermen secret police.
