The Trolls are small, colorful creatures who live in an almost perpetual state of happiness, singing, dancing, hugging, and having fun all day. The Trolls, led by their king, King Peppy, with his infant daughter, Princess Poppy, escape through tunnels on the day of Trollstice when Prince Gristle Jr. was going to eat his first Troll.

In a flashback, King Harold and Queen Lillian are about to sign the kingdom of Far Far Away over to Rumpelstiltskin (Rumpel), in exchange for lifting their daughter Princess Fiona’s curse. In the present time, an angry Rumpel laments his loss and wishes that Fiona’s rescuer, Shrek, had never been born.

Six Troll tribes represent the musical genres Techno, Funk, Classical, Country, Rock, and Pop. Each tribe keeps a magical string that powers their specific kind of music. Queen Barb of the Rock tribe summons all the tribes to a reunion, intending to steal the strings to unite the trolls under rock music after stealing the techno string.

Poppy uncovers Branch’s past as a member of the boy band BroZone, along with his brothers Floyd, John Dory, Spruce, and Clay. When Floyd is abducted, Poppy and Branch set out on a mission to reunite the remaining brothers and save Floyd.
