Joe Leaphorn, a seasoned cop accustomed to the city ways of Phoenix, Santa Fe, and Albuquerque, has returned to the Navajo reservation. His wife Emma is recovering from cancer and feels rejuvenated by the landscape and people of her homeland. Well schooled in urban policing, Leaphorn is soon confronted with a particular Navajo case: a mysterious killer who has a special antipathy for medicine men.

A Navajo shaman is the prime suspect in a murder case in this drama from PBS. But as Officer Jim Chee investigates the case he discovers some unusual events that perplex the veteran lawman, leading to an intriguing climax.

An archaeologist turned pottery poacher thinks she has cracked the secret of the vanished Anasazi culture, when she herself vanishes. As other poachers start dropping dead, Leaphorn and Chee must piece together a case as complicated as the mysteriously decorated pots that seem to motivate the killer.

As Officer Jim Chee watches a windmill, trying to catch the vandal repeatedly sabotaging it, a small plane crashes nearby. Thus begins a tangled story involving not only the vandalism and the crash, but murder, drug smuggling, and burglary. Officer Chee is suspected by the FBI when drugs known to have been on the plane are missing.
