Michael Moran is a bitter former IRA soldier who assumes the role of a harsh and controlling patriarch. In 1888, Mary Kelly and a small group of London prostitutes trudge through unrelenting daily misery. The murder of Martha and her companions grabs the attention of Whitechapel Police Inspector Frederick Abberline, a brilliant, yet troubled, man whose police work is often aided by his psychic visions. Abberline’s investigations reveal that the murders, while gruesome, imply that an educated person is responsible due to the precise and almost surgical method used.

The film alternates between the early years of World War II and the end of the 20th century. Rose McNulty has been a patient in the Sligo Regional Mental Hospital for 40 years since being accused of murdering her baby in 1942. The facility is scheduled for demolition. Dr. Stephen Grene is a psychiatrist who, at the request of the local Catholic Church, is evaluating whether Rose should be transferred or released.

A hot air balloon drifts into the field, obviously in trouble. The pilot catches his leg in the anchor rope, while the only passenger, a boy, is too scared to jump down. Two strangers will become connected by the tragedy, yet one dangerously feels that the connection goes much deeper than the other is willing to admit.

Danish language interpreter Jo Harding suffers head trauma after a fall in her home, causing her to lose her memory of the past year. Harding works to piece her memories together along with her husband Rob to understand what happened to her, and in doing so learns that her life was not as perfect as she thought it was.
