As India celebrates its independence from Great Britain on August 15, 1947, at the stroke of midnight, a nurse switches two newborn babies in a Bombay hospital. Saleem Sinai, born to a poor woman out of wedlock, and Shiva, the son of a wealthy couple, are brought up with destinies that were meant for the other.
