A sword is forged by a blacksmith, who then shows it to his young son, Conan, as he tells him of the Riddle of Steel, an aphorism on the importance of the metal to their people, the Cimmerians. The city guards capture the trio and bring them to King Osric, who requests they rescue his daughter, Princess Yasimina—now a zealot in Doom’s cult—for a handsome reward.

In the year 1600, in North Africa, English mercenary Solomon Kane leads his ship’s crew into battle against the Ottoman occupiers of a fortress town. The priest tries to feed Kane to his parishioners, who have become ghouls, but Kane escapes, only to face the robbers who attacked him earlier, now corrupted servants of Malachi.

Conan and his companion, the thief Malak, are confronted by Queen Taramis of Shadizar. She tests their combat ability with several of her guards. Satisfied, she tells Conan that she has a quest for him. He refuses her, but when she promises to resurrect his lost love, Valeria, Conan agrees to the quest.

Conan is the son of Corin, who is a barbarian chieftain. Conan escapes imprisonment, kills several of the guards, and confronts Lucius, forcing him to reveal that Zym seeks a girl, the pure-blood descendant of the sorcerers of Acheron; sacrificing the descendant and using blood from the girl will unleash the mask’s power.
