Students at Welton Academy have been raised to live lives of tradition and conformity for centuries, but a dynamic new professor named John Keating encourages them to think for themselves, seize the day, and “Carpe Diem.”

At Appleyard College, a girls’ private school near the town of Woodend, Victoria, the students are dressing on the morning of Valentine’s Day, 1900. The group prepares for a picnic to a local geological formation known as Hanging Rock, accompanied by the mathematics mistress Miss Greta McCraw and the young and beautiful Mlle. de Poitiers.

During the Napoleonic Wars, Captain Jack Aubrey of HMS Surprise is ordered to fight the French privateer Acheron. Following the privateer south, Surprise rounds Cape Horn and heads to the Galapagos Islands, where Aubrey is convinced that Acheron will prey on Britain’s whaling fleet.

In 1984, an Amish attends the funeral of Jacob Lapp, who leaves behind his young wife Rachel and eight-year-old son Samuel. Rachel and Samuel travel by train to visit Rachel’s sister. While waiting for a connecting train, Samuel goes into the men’s room and witnesses the brutal murder of an undercover police officer. Policeman John Book goes into hiding in Amish country to protect him until the trial.

During World War II, after the Soviet invasion of Poland, young Polish army officer Janusz Wieszczek is held as a POW and interrogated by the NKVD. Smith cautions Janusz that it is Khabarov’s way to discuss escape plans with newcomers, to maintain his morale, but nothing will come of it.
