Just as Tessa makes the biggest decision of her life, everything changes. Revelations about her family, and then Hardin’s, throw everything they knew before in doubt and makes their hard-won future together more difficult to claim.
In 1890, Frank T. Hopkins and his mustang, Hidalgo, are part of Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show, where they are advertised as the world’s greatest endurance horse and rider. Chief Eagle Horn, who performs alongside Hopkins, approaches Hopkins and Bill about helping the mustangs that have been rounded up by the US government with the intent to euthanize them to make way for farmland.
One month after his breakup with Tessa Young, Hardin Scott meets an unknown man whom he rebuffs when he attempts to talk to him. Meanwhile, Tessa, on her first day as an intern at Vance Publishing, shares an awkward encounter with her new coworker Trevor Matthews. Kimberly takes her to her office where she ends up working all night.
Taking place two years after the events of After Ever Happy, the film portrays Tessa as a flourishing author while Hardin struggles as a musician. Despite their enduring love for each other, their relationship faces trials due to Hardin’s unresolved past issues and Tessa’s increasing uncertainty about their future together.
A realization of the past shakes Hardin’s impenetrable guise to the core, while Tessa suffers a personal tragedy. As the pair work through their difficulties, their relationship is on the edge of sustainability. As the truth about each of their families emerges, the shocking reality is that their respective families are not so different from each other.
