At a meeting of the Astronomy Club, its president, Professor Barbenfouillis, proposes an expedition to the Moon. At this point, a Selenite (an insectoid alien inhabitant of the Moon, named after one of the Greek moon goddesses, Selene) appears, but it is killed easily by an astronomer, as the creatures explode if they are hit with force.

In 1872, an English gentleman Phileas Fogg claims he can circumnavigate the world in eighty days. He makes a £20,000 wager with four skeptical fellow members of the Reform Club that he can arrive back eighty days from exactly 8:45 pm that evening. Together with his resourceful valet, Passepartout, they set out on the journey from Paris by a gas balloon.

In 1890, England, a Chinese man, Lau Xing robs the Bank of England. To evade the police, Xing becomes the valet for Phileas Fogg.
