The series follows a group of young female researchers at News of the Week magazine in the revolutionary times of 1969. Women in the newsroom are relegated to low-level positions. Antwone Fish Fisher is a temperamental young man with a violent history who is serving in the U.S. Navy. The rough life he had as a child has caused him to have a violent temper; after getting into a fight with a fellow sailor, Antwone is sentenced at a captain’s mast to be demoted, fined, and restricted to the ship for 45 days.

Danny is a salesman working in the restaurant supply business along with his friend, ladies’ man Bernie. Bernie invites Danny on a double date, where he meets Debbie, a friend of Joan, Bernie’s latest sexual partner. Danny is still not over his ex-girlfriend Alison, but begins a relationship with Debbie.
