In 1961, Katherine Johnson works as a human computer in the West Area Computers division of the Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, alongside aspiring engineer Mary Jackson and their unofficial acting-supervisor Dorothy Vaughan. Encouraged by her team leader Karl Zielinski, a Polish-Jewish Holocaust survivor, Mary applies for an official NASA engineer position.

Gary, a resident of Smalltown, plans a vacation to Los Angeles with his girlfriend, Mary, to celebrate their tenth anniversary, inviting his brother Walter, a fan of the Muppets, who watched The Muppet Show throughout his youth, so he can tour the Muppet Studios. Mary accepts this, as she is a Muppet fan as well, but feels Gary’s devotion to Walter is distracting from their relationship.

In 1968 New York City—when being gay was still a secret best kept behind closed doors—a group of friends gather for a raucous birthday party hosted by Michael, a screenwriter who spends and drinks too much. An alien race known as the Boov finds near-future Earth a suitable place to call home. One of the Boov, named Oh, is a more excitable, freethinking member of the species, who decides to invite the Boov to his apartment for a housewarming party, despite the race’s antipathy towards him.

The film follows three seasoned birders who each set out to achieve a Big Year. They are Brad Harri, a 36-year-old computer programmer based in Baltimore; Stu Preissler, founder and CEO of a New York company bearing his name; and a roofing contractor named Kenny Bostick, who holds the current Big Year record of 732 birds.
