Over five decades from the 1960s to the early 2000s, wealthy Englishman Patrick Melrose attempts to overcome his addictions and demons rooted in abuse by his cruel father and negligent mother. In 1995, Dolores Claiborne works as a domestic servant on Little Tall Island in Maine. Dolores has a struggle with her elderly, paralyzed employer, Vera Donovan, in her mansion. Vera falls down the staircase and Dolores ransacks the kitchen. She is caught by a mailman, who sees her standing over Vera with a rolling pin, apparently intending to kill her.

He goes out and gets blackout drunk after sneaking in to a bar.

After miraculously recovering from an apparently fatal bullet wound to the head, Gulf War veteran Jack Starks returns to Vermont in 1992, suffering from periods of amnesia. While walking, he sees a young girl, Jackie, and her alcoholic mother in despair beside their broken-down truck. Starks and Jackie quickly form a certain affinity; she asks him to give her his dogtags and he does so.

At a top secret U.S. government facility codenamed Area X, cellular biology professor and Army veteran Lena is questioned after returning as the sole survivor of an expedition to an anomalous zone known as the Shimmer. With Kane in intensive care, a government psychologist, Dr. Ventress, shows Lena the Shimmer and explains that many exploratory teams have entered, but only Kane has ever returned.

The stories told are of the sailors, the prostitute, the union bosses, the hooligans and the gay community set in the early 50s. A prostitute falls in love with one of her customers. Also a disturbed man discovers that he is homosexual.

Lisey’s Story is a personal and pensive thriller following Lisey Landon two years after the death of her famous novelist husband, Scott Landon. When a series of unsettling events take place, Lisey is forced to remember moments from her marriage that she’d deliberately blocked from her mind.

Allison Allie Jones is a software designer in New York City who advertises for a new roommate to share her apartment in the Ansonia. She settles on Hedra Carlson, and they become friends. Hedy explains that her twin was stillborn, leaving her with constant loneliness. Hedy becomes overly protective of Allie, erasing Sam’s voice-mail asking Allie for a reconciliation.
