In 1924, two boys encounter each other at an opera training school in Peking. The friendship that blossoms between them will endure for almost seven decades, weathering through some of the most challenging periods in China’s history.
In 1929, Chiyo Sakamoto, a young girl living in a poor fishing village by the sea, is sold to a geisha house by her father alongside her sister, Satsu, so that they might send money back home.
