In a dystopian, polluted, over consumerist, hyper-bureaucratic alternative present day, Sam Lowry is a low-level government employee who frequently daydreams of himself as a winged warrior saving a damsel in distress. Sam discovers the mistake when he discovers the wrong bank account had been debited for the arrest and visits Buttle’s widow to give her the refund where he encounters the upstairs neighbour Jill Layton, and is astonished to discover that she resembles the woman from his dreams.

In the year 1984, civilization has been damaged by world war, civil conflict, and revolution. Airstrip One is a province of Oceania, one of the three totalitarian super-states that rule the world. It is ruled by the “Party” under the ideology of “Ingsoc” and the mysterious leader Big Brother, who has an intense cult of personality. The Party brutally purges out anyone who does not fully conform to their regime using the Thought Police and constant surveillance.

In a dystopian 1984, Winston Smith endures a squalid existence in the totalitarian superstate of Oceania under the constant surveillance of the Thought Police. Julia procures contraband food and clothing on the black market, and for a brief few months they secretly meet and enjoy an idyllic life of relative freedom and contentment together.

A voice-over narrator explains that in the mid-1950s, a nuclear war and devastation of Earth gave rise to three superstates: Oceania, Eurasia, and East Asia. By 1984, London, with its bomb-proof ministry, is designated as the capital of Airstrip One, a province of Oceania, controlled by one all-powerful Party, embodied by the figurehead Big Brother.

The movie portrays a dystopian society under the oppressive rule of Big Brother, where individual freedoms are severely curtailed. Propaganda, misinformation, and constant surveillance have become commonplace. The protagonist, a mathematician, embarks on a romantic relationship with his colleague and becomes aware of an underground resistance group, challenging the suffocating regime.
