The comfortable lives of three well-mannered siblings are greatly altered when, one evening, two men arrive at the house and take their father away. With the family’s fortunes considerably reduced in his absence, the children and their mother are forced to live in a simple country cottage near a railway station. There the young trio—Roberta, Peter, and young Phyllis—befriend the porter and station master.
Roberta, Phyllis and Peter are the three children of a wonderful mother and father. One day the father, who works at the Foreign Office, is imprisoned as a result of being falsely accused of selling state secrets to the Russians. The children and their mother fall on hard times and eventually move to a poor cottage in the country, near a railway line. Fascinated by the railroad, wave the passengers every day, and their vigilance and courage prevent an accident.
In turn-of-the-century London, Roberta Waterbury lives a perfect upper-class life with her parents, sister and brother until one fateful night when her father is mysteriously arrested. Suddenly impoverished, the children and their mother are forced to move to a dusty cottage far away in the country perched on the edge of a railroad. But along these magical tracks, in the nearby station and on the mighty trains themselves, Bobbie and her siblings will discover adventure, face danger and forge friendships that will change their young lives forever.
The story is based around the backdrop of the child evacuees from inner cities to the countryside during the Second World War. The children also encounter a soldier who is very far from home.
While on holiday in Cornwall, the Trent children discover a mysterious creature with magical powers. It doesn’t take long before the kids find out that their wicked uncle plans to use the creature’s wishmaking for his own dastardly deeds.
