The story follows Pug Henry’s navigation through the circumstances preceding and unfolding during World War II. His posting in Europe exposes him to the emergence of Nazi Germany, the propagation of fascism, and the mounting tensions that ultimately culminate in the war’s eruption. The miniseries portrays the array of personal and professional trials confronted by Pug Henry and his spouse and their three children, all of whom become entangled in the worldwide turmoil.
In 1981, Francis becomes aware of a growing number of deaths from unexplained sources among gay men in Los Angeles, New York City and San Francisco, and is prompted to begin an in-depth investigation of the possible causes. Working with no money, limited space, and outdated equipment, he comes in contact with politicians, numerous members of the medical community, and gay activists.
In the 1950s, James Whale, the director of Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein, has retired. Whale lives with his long-time housemaid, Hanna, who loyally cares for him but disapproves of his homosexuality. He has suffered a series of strokes that have left him fragile and tormented by memories.
Howard Hallenbeck travels to Ireland to research items of religious significance. He goes to a rural church to photograph some graves. Meanwhile, three farmers are attempting to remove an ominous stone column from a field. Two of the farmers head home. A thunderstorm appears out of nowhere, and smoke pours from the ground. Lightning strikes the column. The monster Rawhead Rex rises from the dirt.
