The movie, which is set in 1920s England, opens with Marina Hands’ character, our heroine, bidding her husband, Clifford, farewell as he leaves for war. When he returns home disabled after being left behind on their opulent country house, Constance experiences for the first time the loneliness and seclusion she will later grow accustomed to.
