High school junior Lara Jean Covey writes letters to boys she feels an intense passion for before locking the letters away in her closet. After waking up, she sees Josh approaching with a letter of his own, and in a moment of panic, Lara Jean kisses Peter on the school track to throw Josh off before running off.

Kitty Covey, who has a strong conviction about her understanding of love, relocates to the other side of the world with the intention of renewing her long-distance relationship with her boyfriend. However, she discovers that a relationship is much more intricate when it is one’s own emotions of love that are at risk.

Lara Jean Covey, accompanied by her sister Kitty, her sister Margot, her father Dan, and her neighbor Trina Rothschild, visits Seoul for spring break. She explains her decision to Peter, but his disappointment at her decision is palpable, and he decides to break up with her on prom night to save himself an imminent heartbreak in 3-6 months.

Lara Jean Covey’s high school sets up a volunteer program; while her boyfriend Peter Kavinsky goes to volunteer with his friends, Lara Jean decides to go to Belleview Retirement Home instead, since that’s where her older sister Margot went. They talk about the letter, and John Ambrose agrees to let Lara Jean read the letter as long as she gives it back to him afterward.
