Pi Patel tells the story of his childhood in Pondicherry, India, and the origin of his nickname. One day, his father, a zoo owner decided to move to Canada, where the animals the family owns would also be sold. They board on a Japanese cargo ship with the animals, there is a storm, followed by a shipwrecking. Pi survives in a lifeboat with a zebra, an orangutan, a hyena and a male Bengal tiger.

In 18th-century Qing dynasty China, Li Mu Bai is a Wudang swordsman, and Yu Shu Lien heads a private security company. Mu Bai, choosing to retire, asks Shu Lien to give his fabled sword #Green Destiny# to their benefactor Sir Te in Peking. While at Sir Te’s place, Shu Lien makes the acquaintance of Jen Yu, who is the daughter of rich and powerful Governor Yu and is about to get married.

In 1963, Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist are hired by Joe Aguirre to herd his sheep through the summer on the Brokeback mountains. Jack broaches the subject of creating a life with Ennis on a small ranch, but Ennis refuses; he is unwilling to abandon his family, and is haunted by a childhood memory of two men being killed for suspected homosexual behavior.

During the Second Sino-Japanese War, a shy, inexperienced university student, Wong Chia Chi, travels from Shanghai to Hong Kong and attends her first year at Lingnan University. Chia Chi is still a virgin, and she reluctantly consents to having sex with another student involved in the plot, in order to practice her role as a married woman if she were to sleep with Yee.

The novel takes place over Thanksgiving weekend 1973, during a dangerous ice storm, and centers on two neighboring families, the Hoods and the Williamses, and their difficulties in dealing with the tumultuous political and social climate of the day. The setting is an affluent Connecticut suburb during the height of the sexual revolution.
