The show revolves around a trio of veterinary surgeons working in the Yorkshire Dales. Siegfried Farnon hires James Herriot into his veterinary practice at Skeldale House. Besides Siegfried and James, there is Siegfried’s younger brother, Tristan, and Mrs Hall, the housekeeper at Skeldale House.

The series is set in the 1930s at the Glasgow Veterinary College, where James Herriot has arrived to train as a veterinary surgeon. It focuses on his relationship with his new-found friends Emma ‘Whirly’ Tyson and Rob McAloon. They lodge together at the home of Elspeth Munro. Topics which features in the story lines include the subjugation of women, the treatment of students by Professor Gunnell, and the rise of the fascist movement in the UK.
